An Ecuadorian judge on Monday ordered Chevron to pay $8.6 billion to clean up oil pollution in the country’s rain forest. This is is believed to be the largest-ever judgment in an environmental case.
To top it off, if the U.S. oil giant doesn’t publicly apologize in the next 15 days, the judge ordered the company to pay twice that amount.
When I saw this headline, I admit I wondered if it was a YES MEN prank. Chevron didn’t want the case in U.S. courts–it demanded the trial be in Ecuador. Now Chevron doesn’t want to pay and is playing dirty tricks….
