Yesterday, a local letter to the editor blamed environmentalists for high gas prices because they oppose unlimited drilling and “therefore” are increasing our reliance of foreign oil. It’s important to realize that environmentalists aren’t opposed to all drilling. Unlimited, unregulated drilling is bad for animals, the environment, and people.
For example, rural Wyoming, known for breathtaking views and fresh air, now has worse smog than Los Angeles because of its boom in natural gas drilling. Residents complain of headaches, bloody noses, and shortness of breath. A place where children should be able to run free outdoors, many children are now cooped up indoors.
Is this the future of our country? Perhaps not, if we can reduce our consumption of oil and gas. THAT is what environmentalists are urging: restraint.
Drilling frenzy has never been the answer, and never will be.
