a trillion fish

According to the 2010 report of the UN Convention on Biodiversity, 31 percent of all vertebrates on planet Earth have died out since
1975. A third in 35 years! The culprits: loss of habitat and increased toxicity in the environment.

According to a 2010 metastudy of statistics from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, we are now taking over a trillion fish a year from the oceans. Let me give you an idea how large that number is. A million seconds is about 12 days. A trillion seconds is 31,688 years. According to Daniel Pauly, head of the Fisheries Center of the University of British Columbia, at these rates, all commercial fish species will be in collapse by 2050. All of them.
